About me

Student, linguaphile

Incoko is all about the conversations I have with other people and myself after watching a reality show. All these conversations are here because they prompt multiple discourses which I will be having. My focus is certainly on how people use language and articulate themselves in different spaces. My insights are in depth because I have studied language since 2019.  Incoko will make you cringe, feel awkward and weird. If you do get upset somewhere along the line, you’ll have to interrogate that feeling because these are my experiences.

We need a new language

Decolonisation has been a reoccurring theme throughout this decade and its approach aims to make spaces for the previously marginalized. Space for representation, to coexist and quite frankly it is not entirely effective where language is concerned. While language is a tool to convey messages the greater aspect is that it encapsulates culture. The way…

On a lighter note

I thought I would end on a lighter note, well with the whole discerning conversation. There is one reoccurring theme that is, my Adverse Childhood Experience. It is not unique, nor does it make me special. However, learning more about it has come in handy for my human experience. I can help myself more effectively…

Discerning Part 2

Firstly, I do not have a solution and I do not think I wish to have one regarding all the issues I have mentioned. Okay, I am about to overshare, and I hate that. Fuck! But for the sake of Incoko, I will. For the longest time I have carried the grief of having a…

Discerning

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across a recorded radio interview on YouTube. A popular, songstress was being decoded (well, that’s the name of the segment) and towards the end of the show, a call comes through. The interviewee must guess who the caller is, and it is a person they know, and, in…

Ndiyanamnkela

I am Lilitha, a 21 year old student at Rhodes University. IsiXhosa is my mother-tongue and I am fluent in the language. I can also read, speak and write English and isiZulu(a few Ay’bandla’s here and there, suffice right? ). I love learning about languages and not necessarily speaking them. I enjoy learning about how…

English!

I started speaking English when I was four years old. I have moved around different English schools and universities. I have also spent an extensive time learning about the language at university. However, it is still the most difficult language to express myself in. I never feel that I have said enough, I am never…
